Weathernews announced the emergence trend of fireflies in 2016. It states that this year's emergence season tends to be earlier than previous years and last year nationwide.

Fireflies

hatch earlier and begin to fly earlier in late winter and spring when temperatures are warmer. This year, the late winter and spring temperatures are higher than normal, and fireflies are expected to appear earlier nationwide than in previous years (2009-2015) and last year.

In western Japan, where fireflies have already begun to fly, they are expected to be at their peak from mid to late May. In eastern Japan, fireflies are expected to start flying in mid to late May and be at their best from late May to early June.

In Tokyo, fireflies are expected to start flying around May 18 and be at their best around May 29. In northern Japan, the appearance of fireflies is expected to be two days to one week earlier than usual, due to the continuation of high temperatures from late winter to spring and the expectation of normal to slightly higher temperatures in the coming days. Fireflies are expected to start flying in early June in the southern Tohoku region, and will reach their peak in mid-June.

The appearance of fireflies is affected not only by meteorological factors, but also by the river environment in which the eggs and larvae grow. It should be noted that rising rivers can wash away eggs and larvae, and areas that experienced flooding due to heavy rains last summer may see a decrease in the number of fireflies this year.
