I love ice cream. When I used to live in Kuala Lumpur, I ate it every day without fail, from the luxurious "Magnum" to the colorful popsicles that are "full of artificial sweeteners". Since it is summer all year round in Malaysia, I must have eaten hundreds of popsicles in total.... My body was no longer satisfied with ordinary ice cream.

I, who have "Magnum" in 50% of my body, found an ice cream bar maker from Daiso, a 100-yen store. This is a container that allows you to make ice cream bars from your favorite beverage. This time, I used it to turn various soft drinks into popsicles. We also tried "alcoholic ice cream," which is something you can't usually taste. Also, this "ice bar maker" has a suspicious looking "straw" attached to the handle. We also tried to find out what this straw is and how it is useful.

What is an "ice bar maker"?

An "ice bar maker" is a container in which beverages are poured into a mold and chilled in a freezer to make ice bars. The straw protruding sharply from the handle is a distinctive feature that gives it an atmosphere not found in ordinary ice bar makers.

This time, we chose a beverage that matched the color of the handle. We turned it into an ice cream bar.

Can anything really be made into ice cream?

The handle comes in four color variations: pink, yellow, green, and blue. We prepared Nichirei's "Taiyo no Acerola" in pink, "Tropicana" in yellow, and "Fruit Crystal" flavored with kiwi & white grapes in green.

In addition to soft drinks, we tried ice cream with alcoholic beverages. For the blue color, we prepared Suntory's "Waikiki Blue Hawaii" to see how alcoholic ice cream tastes, which you can never find in commercial ice cream.

What about actually making it?

Pour the beverage into the "Ice Bar Maker. After pouring, cover it tightly with the handle and wait for it to freeze in the freezer. This time I started chilling at 2:00 p.m. and the beverage was frozen into ice cream by the evening. Only the blue "Waikiki Blue Hawaii" took somewhat longer than the other soft drinks, so those who make ice cream with alcoholic beverages should be careful.

When I took the ice cream out of the freezer and tried to pull it out right away, I could not pull it out, probably because it was frozen. I looked back at the instruction manual and found a sentence that says, "Soak the ice in water for a while to melt the outside of the ice and make it easier to pull out. As instructed, I put the ice bar maker in a bowl of water and waited a few dozen seconds, and was able to pull it out easily.

■How does it taste?

All of the ice creams turned out as delicious as we had hoped, but the Tropicana and Kiwi flavors were the ones that our editorial team found to be the most delicious. They said it was refreshing and had a nice aftertaste.

Blue Hawaii, on the other hand, had a noticeably bitter taste, perhaps because it was an alcoholic beverage, and the taste seemed lighter than the liquid version. The strength of the alcohol also seemed to be a little weaker than the liquid version. Still, I am not a big fan of alcohol, so I got lightly intoxicated as I continued eating it.

Because substances contained in the beverage precipitate when frozen in the freezer, all of the ice creams had in common that the flavor was stronger at the tip and thinner at the handle. If you prefer the tastiest part to be the last, you may remove the ice cream from the handle and eat it. However, if you do so, you will not be able to enjoy the "suckable" straw on the handle, which makes this ice cream bar different from ordinary ice cream bar makers.

You can sip even if it melts!

What is this straw, which sticks out about 3 cm from the side of the handle and gives a strange impression to those who see it, used for?

Actually, this straw is used to enjoy ice cream to the fullest.

You were meant to enjoy 100% ice cream.

When you are eating ice cream, there are times when the ice cream starts to melt. With this straw, you can suck the liquid that would not go into your mouth with a regular ice cream bar, but falls out of the tilted side of the ice cream onto the ground, through the handle that catches the ice cream. This allows you to literally taste 100% of the ice cream and also keeps your hands clean.

Finally,

the "Ice Bar Maker" not only reduces the amount of money spent on ice cream, but also creates unknown flavors. It is a fun product that transforms your leftover juice or alcohol into ice cream. However, no matter how much it is ice cream, children should not eat ice cream made from alcohol.

Of course, the price is 108 yen (tax included).
