"FLEX" is an electrically power assisted bicycle that can be folded into a suitcase. Developed by Revelo Electric of Canada.

The feature of "FLEX" is that the pedal is attached to the front wheel and the pedaling method is adopted. Since the number of mechanical parts such as chains can be reduced and the structure can be simplified, it has become possible to reduce the size and weight.

However, if you attach the pedals to the front wheels, problems such as "heavy start" will occur. Incorporating a derailleur into the front wheels will solve the problem, but if so, it would be better to attach a chain to drive the rear wheels.
Electric assist technology solved this problem. "FLEX" assists cyclists with the power of the motor. Achieved a smooth start. It is exactly one that was realized by the development of electric assist technology.

By using front-wheel drive, the size when folded is significantly reduced. It was reduced from 116x100x38 cm in the normal state to 80x60x30 cm in the folded state. As you can see in the catch phrase of FLEX, it fits in a large suitcase. In reality, I think it's rare to put it in a suitcase, but it's small enough to be useful in a room or near an office desk.

The handle is equipped with "Dual-Mode Handlebar (DMH)" technology. This allowed the handle to rotate 90 degrees. This is convenient not only for storage, but also for rolling and moving the folded FLEX.

The battery is installed in the rear loading platform. It can travel 30 kilometers on a single charge. The time required for charging is 3 to 5 hours.
Developer Canada Revelo Electric is currently looking for investors on the crowdfunding site kickstarter for the commercialization of "FLEX". At the time of writing the article, a matte black or gloss white version of "FLEX" is available with an investment of C $ 1,298 (about 120,000 yen). The green or red version requires an additional $ 50 CAD. The amount required to obtain it will increase as the campaign progresses, and the retail price after the end will be around CAD 2,600 (about 240,000 yen). Shipment is scheduled for April 2016. Please inquire about the availability of delivery to Japan.

"FLEX" is treated as a moped in Japan. In order to drive on public roads, you must install a lamp and obtain a number. It's a pity that the size is difficult to store in a suitcase even if it is folded when the number is attached. In addition, please note that you are obliged to wear a helmet and take out liability insurance.
